Billing by the Hour
BF Legal Services charges professional fees based on the time spent handling your legal matter. Our hourly rates range from $100 to $250, depending on the nature and urgency of the work involved.
Please be advised that higher rates may apply for work conducted after normal business hours (after 5:00 PM), on weekends, or on statutory holidays.
Retainers
A retainer is typically required before commencing work on your file. The usual retainer amount is $1,500, but this may vary depending on the scope and complexity of your legal matter.
The funds are deposited into our trust account and drawn against as legal services are rendered.
Contingency Arrangements
In select matters, we may agree to a contingency fee arrangement, where legal fees are payable only if a successful result is achieved on your behalf.
Types of matters we may consider for contingency agreements include:
- Claims before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) or Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT)
- Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) or Tribunal (WSIAT) appeals
- Civil litigation in Ontario’s Small Claims Court
Terms of contingency representation:
- Our standard fee is 30% of the total recovery, plus applicable HST
- Disbursements and expenses (e.g., court costs, filing fees) are the client’s responsibility
- No promotional discounts apply to contingency-based files
- Should you terminate our services, hourly fees will apply up to that point
You are encouraged to review the Law Society of Ontario’s consumer guide on contingency fees, which we are pleased to provide in digital or printed form upon request.
Pro Bono and “Win-Based” Files
At this time, BF Legal Services is not accepting pro bono cases or clients who request to pay fees only upon winning their case. These decisions are based on operational capacity and financial obligations.
